Why You Need Your Own Vehicle on Calypso

For Your Information: this article was last updated on July 12, 2026, Revised and Corrected by Claude.

Obviously, when you evolve in a world as HUGE as planet Calypso, it's better to have your own transport!

Running around is nice, but it has its limits... There are newcomer missions asking you to travel from point A to point B, and trust me when I say: the mobs along the way are not all lower level than you... Some are WAY stronger and can one-shot you if you get too close. So you might think all you have to do is be careful...

But creatures also have different levels of Aggro Range, meaning some are far more aggressive than others. Even if they look far away on your radar (symbolized by a little red dot), they can rush you from a distance, eventually catch you, kill you — and you'll respawn at the nearest revival terminal, which won't always be a friendly spot... like surrounded by MANY dangerous creatures! And you'll be... stuck 😤

Fortunately, there's an in-game channel where people can come rescue you with their vehicles, but sometimes nobody's around — and you can end up waiting for a long time before someone connects... like literally hours! 😶

That's why buying your very own flying vehicle — like a Sleipnir (the cheaper choice) or the more expensive Quad-Wing Interceptor (twice as fast as the Sleipnir) — will be a time and life saver! Vehicles sit in your inventory like items: when you need one, just place it on the ground, then fly or drive to your destination.

Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #55 Inv
Vehicles take room in your inventory, like regular items.

Important: some vehicles are touchier than others, so you'll have to experiment! For example, a Quad-Wing is a bit touchier than a Sleipnir when you place it on the ground — it needs more stable terrain. Whenever you want to place/spawn a vehicle, watch your mouse pointer: it shows either a red cross or a green check icon. Just move the cursor around on the ground until you get the green check to place it.

And vehicles aren't just for exploring... they're very useful for Daily Missions too! Some of the creatures you have to kill are FAR from any teleporter, so it's either fly/drive there or spend 30 minutes running. Your first vehicle should be a flying one anyway, since you'll get a free car from the Mentorship — and several places are far easier to reach with a flying vehicle than with a car.

Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #56Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #57
On both these pictures, I'm flying to the destination where the creatures I have to kill are located.

One last note before we talk about space travel: when you're in the middle of a fight, or you see a dangerous creature charging at you... a flying vehicle is the way to flee without damage. Run away from the mob, place the flying vehicle on the ground from your inventory, and enter it the second it spawns! The mob chasing you simply stops in its tracks... Then just take off and land 50 meters away.

With a land vehicle, this trick doesn't work... mobs keep their aggro on you and start hitting your vehicle! You can still drive away since you're faster, but the only way to prevent all damage and drop aggro entirely is the flying option. If you have the money, the Quad-Wing is the way to go 😌

It's also a great method when kiting creatures — shooting from afar and backing up while you keep firing. If you know what you're doing and have enough firepower, the creatures won't even touch you! But sometimes you're up against creatures way stronger than you, and by the time they close in, you've only taken down 50–70% of their health — and you know they're going to hit VERY hard!

In that case, this method is a lifesaver: place your flying vehicle seconds before the creature reaches you, hop in, the creature drops aggro, fly 20–50 meters away, hop out, then finish it off 😏

Getting Into Space for Just 40 PED

When you play EU... everything seems expensive!

You pay for everything you do, and even the small terminal weapons don't last as long as you'd hoped. So when you see a spaceship flying by... you just dream that one day, you too will have enough money to buy one... But surely not tomorrow, because it must be very expensive, right?!

And so you stay on your planet... Well, guess what? That's WRONG! 😄

  1. What do you need to get into space? A basic flying vehicle called the Sleipnir Mk.1
  2. Does it fly to space by itself? No — you also need some fuel and a Space Thruster
  3. Then what? Attach the Thruster to the Sleipnir and refuel it, since it comes empty
  4. Total cost? ~35 PED for the spaceship + Thruster, and ~5 PED of fuel

40 PED total to reach space and fly all the way to the farthest planet from Calypso: Next Island. You'll buy all this from the auctions, so you'll pay the sellers' markup. Once everything is in your inventory, don't forget to attach the Thruster to the Sleipnir — then you're good to go! Right-click the Sleipnir in your inventory, select "place" to set it on the ground, interact with it to open the menu, and hop in.

Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #58Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #59
Time to prep the Sleipnir with the Thruster, place it on the ground and take off!

The controls are roughly the same as moving your avatar — just know that to take off, you hold the "Jump" key. Keep climbing until you're high above the ground, then keep going until the message appears asking if you want to go into space, as on the screenshot below.

Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #60
Make sure you didn't forget anything before leaving!

Also important: your flying vehicle's storage must be empty before entering space.

A little warning: whenever you land, do it slowly... Land too fast and your flying vehicle takes hull damage — and that's more PED in repairs. Treat your vehicle with respect!

You're in Space! PvP Rules, Pirates and the Lootable Zones

Congratulations, you're now in space! Now, be aware of a few — but VERY important — things...

  1. Space is PvP-enabled (Player vs Player): pirates can shoot down your ship! (Make sure you carry no lootables... if a pirate shoots you down in a lootable zone, he'll take them all)
  2. Not all of space is lootable anymore! There are two kinds of PvP out there: "friendly" PvP (you can be killed, but your cargo is safe) and lootable PvP (your stackables are up for grabs). MindArk reshaped these zones: the lootable area is now smaller and starts further away from the planets. Don't trust the old warning pop-ups — the ONE reliable indicator is the Lootable PVP light on your radar: RED means lootable. Learn to watch it like your fuel gauge.
  3. Space is in 3D (high, medium and low positions).
Pirates tend to camp the middle lanes, so fly high — just hold the jump key to climb in this 3D environment.
  4. Depart with 5 to 10 PED of fuel, or you might run dry and get stranded...
  5. Some zones contain space creatures. As a beginner, FLEE!
A Sleipnir isn't fast and you'll take damage... (one more reason to buy a Quad! 😏)
  6. Traveling from far west (Calypso) to far east (Next Island) takes a LONG time — more than 1 hour in a Sleipnir. Again: if you can afford it, the Quad-Wing halves the trip.

Open your space map like on the screenshot below, find "Next Island", right-click to create a Navpoint — or several if you want to zigzag (to avoid pirates...) — close the map and look around to spot your navpoint. Once you've found it, switch on the autopilot (same key that makes your avatar auto-run) and enjoy the ride!

Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #61
Navpoint, then Autorun for autopilot... then relax!

Well, maybe "relax" is a big word. As I said, you can run into pirates and creatures, so... stay focused! Do something else at the same time if you like, but keep an eye on your screen. I encountered a pirate only twice in more than 30 trips... Unfortunately for me, I was in the kitchen in real life — so I got shot down and reappeared at the nearest space station, where I fully repaired my ship before heading back out to finish my journey.

Important: carrying a Repair Tool + Welding Wire to fix your ship after a bad encounter is always a good idea...

As for creatures, I ran into a few — my own fault for crossing a mob zone. I didn't die, though: my Sleipnir took 150 hull damage, but I managed to fly out of their range.

Again, the Quad is the better option: a Quad outruns any space mob out there — zero damage!

Whatever enemy you meet in space — pirate or creature — if you didn't attach a gun to your ship (bought from the Calypso auctions beforehand), flying away is your only option! And honestly, as a beginner exploring the Universe, you don't need a ship gun... You're still learning the game, and space combat is not urgent — it's something to pick up once you've done everything else that matters.

After more than 3 years of playing, I had a gun on my Quad and never used it even once 😅

Now, on the next screenshot, you can see my inventory packed with MANY weapons! Why? When you travel to another planet, you never know how many players will be there. Remember what I said in the Starting Planet part: other planets are less crowded, so you can't count on finding weapon sellers. Either you stock up on weapons before departure... or you own an Unlimited weapon, and you're set.

Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #62
Back in 2021, I took every gun I owned with me!

How much fuel do you need from Calypso to Next Island?

I had no idea either — that's why I loaded 5 PED of fuel... In the end I arrived with more than 2.8 PED left in the tank. So crossing space from west (Calypso) to east (Next Island) burned just a bit over 2 PED of fuel.

Finally, when you reach your destination planet, you'll pass by a space station first...

Sometimes you have to use the space station to land — like on Monria, where you take a teleporter from the station down to the surface. But for other planets like Next Island or Cyrene, you simply fly toward the planet until the message pops up asking if you really want to land.

Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #63
Welcome to Next Island — the best planet to not lose too many PED 😉

That's it! You've completed your very first space trip all by yourself! Congratulations! 🎉

Vehicles Mean Freedom — but Space Demands the Right Mindset

Owning a vehicle in EU is like owning a car in real life: it's independence! Go wherever you like, explore as far as you want — nothing can stop you! Fly over mobs, discover new teleporters without pressure, and complete quests WAY faster than by running between teleports...

Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #64Entropia Universe Beginners Guide Screenshot #65
Yes my friend, you're free! And let's face it... some vehicles look damn cool! 😎

One last thing I need to repeat, because some players — even veterans — seem to forget it...

Space is PvP! ...Again? Space is Player versus Player! So please don't go crying on the Planet Calypso Forum if a pirate shoots you down. Take it on the chin, swallow your pride, and accept that it's a mechanic of the game. You don't like it? Then don't go into space — stay in your comfort zone.

Or toughen up and get OUT of your comfort zone!

Here's the perfect example of a pointless forum thread, started by a veteran... And when it's a veteran whining, it somehow looks even worse.

The guy opened his post with "I don't care about the money I lost"... which, let's be honest, is exactly what people say when they REALLY care about what they lost. Do yourself a favor: before entering space, bring the mindset of a grown-up.

If you die, you die! If you lose stuff, you lose stuff. That's the game — accept it, and don't flood the forum with tears like a kid who got his lollipop stolen.

And if you'd like to start a pirate career... be careful, because many people in Entropia Universe handle getting killed by other players very poorly. Most can't bear the frustration of losing their money. Personally, I have nothing against pirates — it's a game mechanic, and I come from games where PvP was a real thing! 🥰 But in Entropia, you'll earn a bad reputation... people will open forum threads just to insult you...

I Get Both Sides — but MindArk, Where Is the Space Police?

Now that I've told the whiners to toughen up, let me be fair and look at the other side of the coin — because I genuinely understand the players who avoid space like the plague.

Put yourself in their shoes: EU runs on a Real Cash Economy. When a pirate blows up your ship in a lootable zone and flies off with your cargo, that's not "just pixels" — that's your real money evaporating in a red flash. In World of Warcraft, dying costs you pride and a repair bill in gold. In Entropia, it can cost you actual euros. It's a completely different psychological weight, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

I speak from experience: I've been shot down twice by pirates. One of those times I lost something like 5€ worth of cargo. Did I open a forum thread? No. Did I demand MindArk refund me? No. I accepted my fate, repaired my ship and moved on with my life — because I knew the rules when I entered space. That's the mindset. But I can hold that mindset AND still say the system itself has a design flaw...

Because here's my real problem — and it's not with the pirates:

In real life, you can get attacked in the street. Someone can snatch your iPhone. It happens... But in real life, you can run to the police! Public transport has security patrols — not everywhere, not always, but their mere existence means it's not total chaos. People know they can't just do whatever they want, because there might be consequences.

And that's exactly what's broken in Entropia Universe's space: the PvP mechanic is fine, but it lacks any equivalent of real-life law enforcement. No police patrols. No security escorts. No NPC federal cruisers making pirates think twice near the trade lanes. Space is a lawless chaos zone where anyone can kill anyone with zero consequences — forever. In a universe where MindArk simulates a real economy, real trade routes and real money... they somehow forgot to simulate the one thing every real economy relies on: protection.

And here's the punchline that says it all: in January 2025, MindArk finally added law-and-order NPCs to space... just kidding — they added NPC Space Pirates! 😆 Yes, you read that right: the official space update introduced AI pirates that ambush ships near the Navigation Relay Beacons and Outlaw Zones, alongside the new space mining content. So MindArk had the technology to populate space with NPCs all along... and when they finally used it, they chose to add MORE predators instead of a single patrol. The in-game lore even has the "Federal Empire" issuing warnings about pirate activity — a Federal Empire that apparently owns zero patrol ships 🤡 You couldn't make it up.

The irony is that space matters more than ever now: with asteroid mining, space hunting grounds and daily space contracts added in 2025, MindArk keeps giving players more reasons to fly out — and more valuable cargo to carry — while still refusing to give them a single reason to feel safe. More honey, same wasps, still no beekeeper.

So here's my two-sided conclusion: players — grow a thicker skin, space PvP is part of the deal and rage-quitting threads help no one. MindArk — give this universe the security layer any functioning economy deserves: NPC patrols, escort missions, safer (maybe taxed?) trade lanes for those willing to pay for protection. The pirates would still have their hunting grounds, the traders would have real choices, and space would finally feel like a living frontier instead of a free buffet. Everybody wins — even the pirates, who'd get smarter prey.

2,300+ hours in. I've earned this opinion.

I've been shot down by pirates twice, lost real money, and never wrote a single crying thread about it. But I'll say it loud: space PvP is fine — a space with NO police, that's the design flaw. Team Pirate or Team Patrol? Come tell me. I'll be right here.
