Demon’s Souls RPCS3 Emulator — Play on PC at 60 FPS

Demon's Souls was originally released in 2009 on PlayStation 3 as an exclusive, so nothing for PC users.

The version I'm reviewing today is the original, running on the RPCS3 emulator! Patch version: N/A

What You Actually Need to Run It on PC

First, I'd like to thank all the developers involved in the creation of the RPCS3 emulator!

I put the link at the top of this page, as it's an honor for me to talk about such an accomplishment!

Second thing: I'm glad I left my virtual addiction called Entropia Universe! If you've followed me on this website, you know I'd been playing EU for 3+ years, but recently managed to sever my link to it. It proved to be a very good decision, as I finally found the time to enjoy other virtual entertainment like... Demon's Souls! 😍

So basically, if you want to play Demon's Souls on your PC, you need 3 things:

1. A powerful gaming computer.
2. The RPCS3 emulator (link at the top of this page).
3. A dump of the game — made from your own Demon's Souls disc, or your own PS3 digital copy.

Alternatively, Fitgirl have created a Repack that you just need to install. Again it's only in the case where you own a copy of Demon's Souls, but don't know the process to go further with the Disc conversion and the emulator.

By the way... FitGirl is a Man like all repackers... Actually even the famous hacker Empress was also a Man 😏 Always make me laugh when people on forums are calling him a SHE 😄 One day he said that he was a hot girl, and fans believed him like it was gospel... Just because he cracked Denuvo doesn't mean you have to believe everything.

Anyway back to the Demons Souls subject !

Emulating a console has always required a far more powerful system than the original hardware — that's why, if you don't have a powerful gaming computer, you won't be able to run an emulated game at 60 FPS without lag or slowdowns. And you should also know that as of today, roughly 75% of PlayStation 3 games can be completed from start to finish with RPCS3. That means 25% still can't be — but fortunately, Demon's Souls is part of the 75%, as it runs perfectly! 😘

For those who've never played a Souls-like, it's all about challenging the player! For example, in every Souls game (or most of them), there's an "impossible" fight right at the beginning 😅 It's designed to make you lose... but it's actually possible to win it! Absolutely not necessary — but if you want to prove what you're made of, you can spend some time restarting the game until you manage to kill this "tutorial" boss.

Souls-like games are all about impossible odds! You always end up in situations where you're likely going to die! But... there's always a way to prevail, always a way to turn the situation to your advantage. Most players, when they meet a boss for the first time, are going to think: "What the fuck is that shit?! How am I supposed to win?!"

But that's the whole charm of this game: nobody's going to hold your hand, you'll learn the hard way!

The RPCS3 Tweaks: Dark Screen, Black Screen & 60 FPS

Now that that's out of the way, you should know you'll have to tweak a few options in RPCS3.

• You can play Demon's Souls without touching anything in RPCS3, but you'll quickly notice the game is a little too dark in some places. That's because you need to disable Dynamic Exposure, by clicking "Manage Game Patches" in RPCS3.
• But then you'll hit another issue: a black screen when launching the game 😏
  To fix that, go to the GPU options in RPCS3 and enable Write Color Buffers.
• As for playing at 60 FPS instead of 30, that's also in the "Manage Game Patches" section — just apply and save.

Speaking of time... Demon's Souls is also known for its long runs from the nearest safe spot to the bosses. Sometimes you'll literally have to run and fight your way through for several minutes before getting another attempt at the boss! And when you know a boss can kill you in seconds while you're still learning their patterns, it gets very frustrating — because in the end, you spend more time running than actually learning the fight.

On PC there's a way around it. It's something I figured out years ago playing Dark Souls: when you're finally standing in front of the fog gate before the boss, quit the game. Then open File Explorer, go to where the savegames are stored, and copy-paste the folder containing your save to another location to create a backup.

Now, when you come back, you'll respawn right in front of the fog — no more frustrating run. And if you die, just copy-paste your backup over the original save location, and you'll respawn at the boss again and again. Basically it's just a matter of switching from your game to the explorer window for a quick copy-paste, thanks ALT+TAB 🙃

Seems like a dire situation on the left, and plenty of enemies on the right before the boss!

Some people would call that "cheating"... but it isn't. On the contrary, it's useful in 3 situations:

1. No more frustrating runs and TIME LOST getting back to the boss — and it doesn't make the boss any easier.
2. There are situations in the game — like when the Priest gets killed by the Assassin you freed — where you're screwed, because now you can't change your Faith spells (Miracles) for the rest of the game! A save backup fixes that 😎
3. If you're 46 years old like I am... you DON'T want to waste time anymore.

But if you're playing online, don't do it... I think it can get you banned. It's only good for casual players like me who play offline. If you start messing with your savegames online, I think it can be detected by the anti-cheat.

The Five Worlds and How to Tackle Them

You should know there are 5 different worlds in Demon's Souls, and right after you kill the 1st boss of the first world, you basically have access to everything. But the final battle located in World 1-4 (meaning the 4th area of the 1st world) stays locked until you've completed every other world.

You can do a bit of everything, or complete each world one after the other — it's up to you. There's even a recommended order from the community if you look it up on Reddit.

Personally, I went 1-1, 1-2, then completed World 2, then back for 1-3 and a bit of 1-4, before going back to complete World 3, World 4 and World 5... and finally returned for the last zone of 1-4.

Mindflayers can be a pain in the ass, and another Vanguard as a mini-boss in World 4-1!

Regarding weapons, there are different playstyles... You can go one-handed or two-handed, and even wield a great sword in one hand! It depends on your Strength, but also on the way you fight. Personally I went for the Winged Spear, which is far from being the most damaging weapon in the game, but it's very fast and suited my own style.

You can also decide to block most attacks with a shield, or dodge if you feel more confident, or even use the riposte — something only players who've mastered the game can time perfectly to deal A LOT OF DAMAGE! I'm not that kind of player... so I relied heavily on my shield and Endurance level, and a little on dodging.

Fighting on a ledge... don't roll or you might fall, and one BIG but fairly easy boss 😅!

Death in Souls games doesn't only happen in battle... Sometimes it's a stupid death from falling off a ledge. Or you're climbing a big tower, you stray a little too far at some point, and — bing! You fall! 😤

Impressive boss! But again... particularly easy! And it seems the bridge is too small for both of us!

But I guess this is the way to make us more patient in the end, because trust me, there are bosses where you can't just go all in. You need to be patient — it's more of a marathon than a 100-meter sprint! Don't play Usain Bolt in a Souls game.

Equip Burden, Patches & What's Next for Emulation

That's my character when I completed the game after 50+ hours of gameplay! It could actually have taken longer if I hadn't used the "savegame backup trick"! I've read all the frustration on Reddit from players having to run for 10 minutes just for another attempt at a world boss — some of them literally lost hours of their lives!

That was one hell of an experience, and I loved every hour of it! (well... mostly 😜)

One important thing: always keep your Equip Burden under 50%! That way you get access to the fast roll. Otherwise, if you're carrying too much, you'll only manage the slow "fat roll" — and that can kill you very fast, plus it's no fun at all.

Final word... It's great to see we can now emulate a PlayStation 3 and play 75% of the existing library! Sometimes there are glitches, and most of the time you'll have to tweak the GPU options and install the game patches. There is a great website where you can download all of the PS3 games patches, it's ps3.aldostools.org .

And it's now even possible to emulate PlayStation 4 games! 🤠

The emulator is shadPS4, developed by George Moralis — the genius who previously worked on PCSX and founded PCSX2 (the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 emulators). It's still under heavy development, but we've already seen that it's possible to play Bloodborne from start to finish! And that's a hell of an achievement!

Emulation update (July 2026):

Funny thing about that "75%" figure I threw out back in early 2025 — it was too optimistic at the time.

RPCS3 was actually sitting well below that. But reality caught up with me: the emulator crossed 70% in January 2026, and officially hit 75% on July 16, 2026 — that's 2,681 games out of 3,559 rated fully Playable. So my number was wrong when I wrote it, and it's exactly right now 😅 I'll take that.

A few other things worth knowing if you're reading this in 2026:

• RPCS3 cleared the 100% "loadable" mark back in Christmas 2022 — no PS3 game boots to a blank screen anymore.
• Hardware requirements have become reasonable: Thanks to the constant performance updates! an RTX 2060 / RX 5600 XT class card is now the official "Recommended" tier. You don't need my 4070 Ti.
• In May 2026, Digital Foundry ran RPCS3 on a jailbroken PlayStation 5 and pushed Ridge Racer 7 to native 4K60. Sony's own current hardware, running a PS3 emulator, better than the PS3 ever did. Let that sink in 🤯
• shadPS4 has come a long way too: Bloodborne is now fully playable — even on a Steam Deck — and George Moralis (Shadow 😎) has been testing online features (messages, ratings, other hunters' phantoms) through a project called ShadNet. Still a long road, in his own words, but it's happening.

And here's another part that actually matters...

Sony is ending physical game production by 2028. A growing number of PS3 titles have never been reissued digitally and are no longer purchasable through any official channel. PS3 consoles are dying of old age — the laser drives, the thermal paste, the YLOD. Emulation isn't nostalgia any more, it's an archive. Fifteen years of reverse engineering by volunteers, for free, so that a console's entire library doesn't just quietly disappear. Respect where it's due 🫡

When French Politics Discovered Gamers Exist

A French anecdote on the subject. When Sony announced on July 1st, 2026 that physical PlayStation discs were dead, it took exactly one day for French politics to notice. On July 2nd, Jean-Luc Mélenchon — leader of La France Insoumise and a candidate in the 2027 presidential election — tweeted that "tomorrow, you'll pay without ever owning anything", and promised to legislate the video game into a protected cultural good.

To be fair, the man isn't new to the topic: he took a swing at Assassin's Creed Unity's version of the French Revolution back in 2014, and in 2017 his supporters — recruited from the 18-25 forum of jeuxvideo.com — built him a game called Fiscal Kombat, which he happily played on YouTube. So yes, he's been courting gamers for about a decade.

But campaigning against the death of physical media? That started 24 hours after Sony's press release, nine months before an election. He was accused of opportunism within the hour — and personally, I think the accusation sticks. It's a convenient political ploy from a party I wouldn't recommend to anyone, and it works precisely because the rest of the political class still treats gamers like children. Still we shouldn't vote for a president only based on what's good for us gamers...

Think big picture... We deserve better than being a voter pool someone discovered on a deadline 😏
